Classic Halloween Costumes

Halloween isn't just a kids' holiday any longer. Over the last 30-40 years, it is ever more popular, with grown ups getting into the spirit and also children. And of all the so-called Halloween traditions, costumes are the biggest one for everyone.

Right from the time kids are toddlers, they're getting dressed up for Halloween (although for babies the thrill is more for the parents than the children!)

There are just about endless ideas for children costumes, but the most used from one year to another are the licensed characters from their favorite movies and TV shows. And usually the most used is any character from the past summer's biggest hit movies.

More classic Halloween costumes like pirates, witches, ghosts and aliens always work too. As children get older, they usually get gorier every year. Fake wounds, scars and blood are common sights with older trick-or-treaters. And the less their parents like it, the better.

Adult Halloween costumes are getting more common every year as well. You will find lots of licensed costumes for grown ups and also most of the old standbys.

When grown ups get dressed up, they quite frequently like to stick to a theme - everyone at the party dresses according to theme or perhaps a couple will dress in complementing costumes of some type.

Historical costumes like Renaissance or Medieval outfits are also popular with grown ups. Or "decade" costumes - flappers from the Roaring 20's or a 40's zoot suit.

One distinction between children costumes and grown ups is that grown ups often put together their own outfit, with more focus to the details. Kids are perfectly happy with a costume that you bought from your costume store.

Adult Halloween costumes can get quite elaborate - something that could be right at home on a movie set. Costume makeup and high quality masks and clothing are quite common.

Costume rental stores can help with getting all this together. A top-notch costume can cost plenty of money and renting it might make sense, especially if you want to have a different costume every year.
